Court packing, the idea that Congress can add members to the Supreme Court, has become one of the central questions of the 2020 election since President Donald Trump nominated someone to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg after her death.

Trump chose Judge Amy Coney Barrett, and the Senate is set to start the confirmation hearings on Oct. 12. Some Democrats have responded to her nomination by threatening to pack the courts, but Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris have repeatedly refused to answer questions about what is shaping up to be one of the most critical issues of the election.
