Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman announced he would retire and not seek reelection on Jan. 25, but the impact of the two-term incumbent’s decision could extend far beyond the borders of The Buckeye State.

Portman won his 2016 election by more than 20 points, and former President Donald Trump carried the state of Ohio by eight points in the 2020 presidential election. Still, the retirement of an incumbent in an important seat could be a red flag for a party that was hurt by a wave of important retirements ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
