A shooter injured at least two people near a U.S. Army base in Frederick, Maryland, on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

Frederick Police Department Chief Jason Lando told reporters at a press conference that police received a call about the shooting at 8:20 am. Upon responding to the call at a local business park, they discovered the shooting victims, who have since been transported by helicopter to a Baltimore hospital. The victims are both in critical condition, according to ABC 7 News reporter Scott Taylor.

Police officers searched base housing for the suspect, according to WUSA 9. The shooter, a 38-year-old man, was shot by Fort Detrick personnel after he traveled to the base, according to Lando. The public is no longer at risk, Lando confirmed.

Frederick Police announced the shooting near Fort Detrick on Twitter at about 9:00 a.m. Fort Detrick is an Army garrison that houses much of the U.S.’s biological defense and research.

Police and military officials confirmed at a 2:30 pm press conference that the shooter, Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, was a Navy medic and petty officer third class. Brigadier General Michael Talley, the commanding general at Fort Detrick, told reporters that he would not comment on the shooter’s motives.

The two victims, both Navy sailors, were shot inside a Navy-related business at the Riverside Tech Park, police officials said at the 2:30 press conference, according to The Associated Press. Woldesenbet then drove to Fort Detrick, where he refused to stop for base security. When he brandished his weapon at base police officers, they shot him.
