A Daily Mail report on “How Biden’s climate plan could limit you to eat just one burger a MONTH, cost $3.5K a year per person in taxes, force you to spend $55K on an electric car and ‘crush’ American jobs” lit up social media, sparking backlash and a flurry of fact-checks.

The report was based on a University of Michigan study calling for lower meat consumption in an effort to combat climate change and connecting its practical implications to Biden’s 2030 climate goals. It laid out the potential requirements of of Biden’s sweeping and ambitious climate goals in real, practical terms. While Biden’s climate plan does not call for decreased meat consumption, its stated goals could easily make use of existing political and cultural pressure along with regulatory precedent to get the job done without ever explicitly pressing for what will likely be an unpopular policy.
