House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has come under fire for struggling to corral some members of the Republican caucus, like Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney. If McCarthy’s grasp on the party continues to weaken, figures like Republican Reps. Jim Jordan from Ohio, Jim Banks from Indiana or Steve Scalise from Louisiana might be in a good position to challenge him.

Even though the 2022 midterm elections are far away, the Republican Party seems well positioned to take back control of the House, according to 538. With that, Republicans will have a chance to name a new Speaker of the House. McCarthy may be the favorite to take up the gavel, but his position in a party still heavily influenced by former President Donald Trump isn’t necessarily bulletproof.
