Chinese developers have been buying up U.S. farmland and other agricultural properties for years, sparking concerns among farmers and lawmakers as tensions between the world’s two largest economies continue to increase.

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported the U.S. contains roughly 897 million acres of farmland. More than 35 million acres of farmland is held by foreign investors, and Chinese investors in particular own around 200,000 acres, according to the latest USDA data on foreign-owned farmland published in December 2019.
