Police: Man Smoking Cigarette Outside His Home Shoots Armed Robber In The Head

A man fatally shot an armed robber who approached him on a bicycle Wednesday night in Philadelphia, police said.

The 24-year-old man, whose identity was not disclosed, was standing outside his home smoking a cigarette when the armed suspect approached him, police said, according to 6 ABC. When the suspect allegedly announced a robbery was going to take place, police said the 24-year-old man took out his gun and shot him, the outlet reported. The incident occurred Wednesday night around 11:30 p.m.

Police responded to the incident and found the alleged would-be robber on the sidewalk, NBC 10 Philadelphia reported. The suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, later died at the hospital, the outlet also reported. Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small reacted to the incident, telling NBC 10 Philadelphia that it looked like the robbery target “turned the tables on the would-be robber and shot him in the head.”

The 24-year-old man told police that he’d used his gun on the armed robber when they responded to the incident, according to FOX 29. The man had a valid gun permit, police said, according to the outlet.

Despite being shot in the head, the suspect allegedly fired one or two times at the 24-year-old, but the shots didn’t hit him, the outlet reported. Police reportedly recovered the suspect’s bicycle and two semi-automatic guns from the scene.

Police are looking for surveillance footage that might provide more details about the incident as they investigate, 6 ABC reported. No charges were filed against the 24-year-old man as of early Thursday morning, according to NBC 10 Philadelphia.
