Voters in New York will elect representatives for 26 districts and one member to the U.S. Senate when they head to the ballot boxes on November 8. They must also cast their votes in the governor race, along with various municipal contests and a proposition relating to a $4.2 billion environmental bond.

You can wager on the midterm elections by visiting high-quality politics betting sites such as BetOnline, Bookmaker or Heritage Sports. They make the Republicans the heavy favorites to reclaim control of the House, whereas the Democrats have a slight edge in the battle for control of the Senate. There are also some interesting markets on New York elections, so keep reading to discover your options.

Who Will Win the New York Midterm Elections?

All 50 states drew new congressional districts in 2022. New York Democrats initially hoped to gain an advantage, but a court upheld a Republican legal challenge, leading to a more neutral state electoral map. Major changes include Old Astoria, Morningside Heights, Bensonhurst, Co-op City, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Sunset Park.

Incumbent Chuck Schumer (D), the Senate Majority Leader, is up against GOP candidate Joe Pinion, a former television host from Yonkers, in the state’s only senate election. Schumer holds a double-digit lead over his little-known Republican rival in the polls. It is considered a slam-dunk, so U.S. betting sites are not taking bets on it. In the UK, betting site Smarkets gives Schumer a 99.9% chance of success.

The elections in New York will also yield 26 candidates to serve in the House. In 2020, New York had 27 representatives – 19 Democrats and eight Republicans – but it has now lost a House seat to Minnesota following the census. Seven of those races look tight:

  • Politico’s forecasters have 14 districts as solid Democratic.
  • Districts 21, 23 and 24 are solid Republican seats, while Districts 2 and 11 are likely to go to the GOP. The remaining seven could go either way.
  • Districts 19 and 22 are rated toss-up.
  • District 1 leans GOP, and Districts 3, 4, 17 and 18 lean Democrat.

In short, the Democrats will gain the most seats, but the size of their margin could be crucial, leading some commentators to suggest that the road for control of the House might just run along the Hudson River.

New York Governor Race

Governor Kathy Hochul is the -1500 favorite with BetOnline to win the New York governor race. That means you would need to lay down $1,500 to win $100. Gov. Hochul was appointed last year after Andrew Cuomo resigned. She was formerly lieutenant governor, but this will be her first gubernatorial election.

She is up against Lee Zeldin, an attorney, politician and officer in the United States Army Reserve, who has represented New York’s 1st congressional district since 2015. He defeated three challengers in the Republican gubernatorial primary, so he will now go head-to-head with Gov. Hochul, the first woman to serve as governor of New York State. Former President Donald Trump recently endorsed Zeldin.

The New York Post reported on October 16 that the Hochul-Zeldin race is now considered a toss-up, but BetOnline makes him the +600 underdog. Only two governors – Mike DeWine in Ohio and Ron DeSantis in Florida – have shorter odds on winning their elections, suggesting that Gov. Hochul should prevail by a comfortable margin.

Is AOC Up for Re-Election in 2022?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez secured a shock victory over incumbent Joe Crowley in the Democratic primaries ahead of the 2018 midterms. She went on to win the general election with more than 78% of the vote and took office at the age of 29. That made her the youngest woman and the youngest Latina to serve in congress.

She has emerged as one of the country’s most polarizing figures since then, with legions of fans and an army of detractors. AOC is a self-declared democratic socialist, who advocates for criminal justice reform, a single-payer healthcare system and for radical action to fight back against climate change,

Ocasio-Cortez took more than 71% of the vote in 2020. She was unopposed in the 2022 Democratic primary, and she now faces Republican Tina Forte – who says “I have no shame and I have no filter” when discussing her straight-talking approach. Forte has branded Ocasio-Cortez a “crime surge creator.” However, AOC is expected to cruise to victory.

Looking further ahead, she is priced at +6000 to become the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election and +3500 to be nominated as the Democratic candidate for vice president. You can also grab odds of +10000 on her winning the 2024 presidential election.

Can You Bet on Politics in New York?

Locally regulated sportsbooks such as FanDuel, DraftKings and Caesars are not permitted to offer politics betting. No states allow politics wagering at local sites and mobile sports betting apps, so New Yorkers need to visit offshore online gambling sites to bet on the midterms and the presidential election.

BetOnline, Bookmaker and Heritage Sports– our recommended sites for midterm election betting – are all based overseas. That allows them to offer politics betting, as they are permitted to do so in their jurisdictions. There are no laws to stop New Yorkers from betting at offshore sites. That means it is absolutely legal for you to do so.

The sportsbooks we have mentioned on this page are legitimate, trustworthy operators, and they have been paying customers out on time for many years. They are secure and reputable, so we recommend using one of them for politics betting.

Senate vs. House: What’s the difference?

The Senate and the House are the two chambers of the federal government. They are required to work together to create laws. Each state has two members of the U.S. Senate – Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand serve New York.

The House is divided into districts, so larger states such as New York have greater influence in the chamber. There are 435 representatives, and New York will now account for 26 of them following the congressional races.
