An assailant broke into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband Paul’s home in San Francisco early Friday morning, violently attacking him, according to a spokesperson for Pelosi.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said in a statement.

The attack was carried out with a hammer, law enforcement sources told CNN.

Pelosi and her protective detail were in Washington, D.C. when the break-in occurred, according to the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP). USCP California Field Office personnel arrived on the scene quickly, and the police force is helping the FBI and San Francisco Police with a joint investigation of the incident, it announced. “The San Francisco Police Department has the suspect in custody,” the USCP said. “The motivation for the attack is still under investigation.”

The San Francisco Police Department told the Daily Caller News Foundation its officers responded at approximately 2:27 a.m. local time.

Nancy Pelosi’s 12th Congressional District of California covers most of the city, and her husband is a San Francisco native. House members are currently on a district work period.

“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill said.

Nancy Pelosi delivered a speech at Crimea Platform‘s First Parliamentary Summit in Zagreb, Croatia earlier this week, reiterating support for Ukraine.
