Legendary Raiders Punter Ray Guy Dead At 73

Legendary Raiders punter Ray Guy passed away at 72 on Thursday, his alma mater Southern Mississippi University announced.

He passed away in the morning, according to CBS Sports.

In his college years, Guy was a punter for the Golden Eagles team at Southern Mississippi and was named an All-American following his senior season, according to CBS Sports.

He went on the the NFL as 23rd overall pick in the 1973 draft and was an All-Pro each season on the Raiders from 1976-78. (RELATED: Former Green Bay Packer Tyrone Davis Dead At Age 50)

Guy was a key component of three Raiders Super Bowl championship teams, His most famous play came in Super Bowl XVIII, where he made a 40-plus-yard punt and saved the team from a potential Commanders touchdown. His team won 38-9, according to CBS Sports.

Guy spent his 14-year-long career with the Raiders, retiring after the 1986 season, according to CBS Sports.

The Ray Guy Award, awarded for college football’s top punter, was created in 2000 in his honor, according to the NFL.

Guy would have turned 73 on December 22, according to his page on the National Football Hall of Fame.
