New York’s 19th congressional district formerly held by Democratic New York Lieutenant Gov. Antonio Delgado flipped red Tuesday in favor of Republican New York Congressman-elect Marc Molinaro.

Current Dutchess County Executive Molinaro, defeated Democratic New York congressional candidate Josh Riley, winning over eight of the eleven counties in New York’s new 19th congressional district, the New York Times reported. Molinaro soared over Riley by more than 6,000 votes, according to the outlet.

Despite polls showing a slight lean toward Riley, Molinaro was apparently able to resonate with voters by campaigning on bipartisanship, cutting taxes, funding police and expanding farming resources in upstate New York, according to campaign ads posted to his Twitter.

“I am honored to serve and humbled by the support,” he tweeted. “We have much to do and I will work every day to be worthy of this awesome opportunity.”

Following New York State’s redistricting, the 19th district that Delgado had presided over split into two, with Molinaro running in the Northern half, which incorporated parts of New York’s Southern tier, and former Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan running in the Southern half, which became the 18th congressional district. Ryan defeated Molinaro over control of the previous 19th district in a special election in August 2022.
