Adorable video footage shows a mother chimpanzee meeting her newborn baby boy for the first time after her C-section at a Kansas zoo.

The Sedgwick County Zoo shared the heartwarming video to social media which shows the mother, Mahale, entering the room where her newborn son laid. The baby chimpanzee, named Kucheza, was swaddled in a blue blanket on top of a soft bed.

Mahale enters the room and gazes at her newborn son before Kucheza reaches up with his small hand. Suddenly Mahale jumps to grab him, swoops him up, unwraps him from his swaddle and cradles him.

“Good job, Mahale!” one of the employees could be heard saying in the video.

Mahale had to undergo a C-section after the veterinarians noticed Mahale was having trouble during labor, the zoo said in a post on Facebook. Dr. Heather Areas, the director of animal health at Sedgwick County Zoo said the difficulty with animal births is doctors have a hard time monitoring contractions, according to KWCH. “The teamwork and the collaboration with human medical doctors and the collaboration with the community, I think that is something that not every zoo has. So fortunate to be a part of it here in Wichita.”

The zoo said the “baby wasn’t breathing well on his own so he stayed in the hospital” until he could be reunited with his mom.

Other video footage shared by the zoo shows Mahale up close cradling her baby boy.
