A suspect has been detained in connection with the November murder of four University of Idaho students, the Moscow Police Department announced Friday.
Police arrested Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, overnight Thursday following a weeks-long investigation, Moscow Police Chief James Fry said during a press conference. The suspect is a graduate student at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, police continued. He is currently in custody in Pennsylvania.
Authorities were previously able to trace a white Hyundai Elantra seen in the vicinity of the crime scene to Kohberger, CNN reported, citing documents and unnamed sources. Kohberger left the Moscow area and went to Pennsylvania, where an FBI surveillance team tracked him for four days before investigators from the Moscow Police Department, the Idaho State Police Bureau and the FBI were able to gather sufficient evidence against the suspect to obtain a warrant for his arrest, according to CNN. Investigators were reportedly able to match Kohnerger’s DNA to samples found at the crime scene.

“These murders have shaken our community and no arrest will ever bring back these young students. However, we do believe justice will be found through the criminal process,” Fry said during the press conference.
Kohberger has been charged with four counts of first degree murder in addition to felony burglary with intent to injure the residents, according to Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court again Jan. 3.
The slayings of Kaylee Goncalves (21), Madison Mogen (21), Ethan Chapin (20) and Xana Kernodle (20) have received worldwide attention, with police receiving tens of thousands of tips over the past several weeks, CNN reported. (RELATED: Police Arrest Man For Murder In Cold Case From 1998)
Though a suspect has been arrested, officials are asking anyone with information about Kohberger to reach out to authorities as they continue their investigation.
“Be assured the work is not done, this is just getting started.” Fry told reporters.
