An Oregon couple was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing 265 apartment keys, according to police.

The Gresham Police Department (GPD) responded to a report of a suspicious man in the parking lot with a gun. Another caller said the suspect may have been involved in the theft of a 2011 Kia Sportage on April 9, according to police.

“We just didn’t know what was going on. We stayed in the house. We had about seven police cars out here and they had the K-9 unit came all through our yard and the neighbor’s yard and down the street,” a bystander told Fox 12.  “I know there was a bag but I don’t know know what was in it. They had several bags.” (RELATED: Dem Mayor Demands Curfew To Curb Skyrocketing Youth Violence)

The couple tried to flee the scene when police arrived, but were taken into custody. During the investigation, GDP found 265 apartment keys, according to Fox 12. Police connected the stolen keys and several electronic devices to a burglary at an apartment complex on April 9.

Police have not released any further information about this arrest or the suspects at this time.

GPD reported that crime has increased in recent years in the city. Burglaries, robberies, shootings, stolen vehicles and vandalism all spiked in 2022. Gresham is trying to address crime by increasing the camera program, putting lights in parking lots, and hiring two street-level outreach personnel to provide trauma-informed support for victims of gun violence, reports KOIN6.

GPD and Columbia Trails Apartments did not immediately respond to Daily Caller’s request for comment.
