Two women were detained Wednesday in Stockholm, Sweden, after throwing red paint at and then gluing themselves to the frame of a Monet painting.

The two women targeted the French artist’s masterpiece, “The Artist’s Garden at Giverny,” which was on display at Sweden’s National Museum, according to The Associated Press. It’s unclear whether the piece and its frame were damaged irreparably during the so-called protest, but it is “now being examined by the museum’s conservators to see if any damage has occurred,” a spokesperson for the museum noted.

Footage of the attack shows the two women throwing the paint and then lecturing another person filming the incident.

“The situation is urgent. As a nurse, I refuse to watch. The pandemic was nothing compared to the climate collapse. It’s about life or death,” one of the women told the videographer. She was later identified as Emma Johanna Fritzdotter, the AP noted.

“The crime is currently classified as aggravated vandalism. It is unclear whether more people than the two arrested are involved in the incident, but a number of people have been checked and the police will, among other things, review the course of events with the help of the museum’s surveillance cameras,” local law enforcement said of the incident, according to CNN. The attack was claimed by a group called “Restore the Wetlands,” who claim that the Swedish government is failing to honor international commitments to climate policy, EuroNews reported.

The group clearly don’t realize how stupid they are in trying to force change like this, when all they’ve done is destroy a priceless piece of European history and made themselves look like idiots.
