Democratic Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell denounced the Biden administration’s decision to cancel the transfer of the U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama, calling the move “shameful” on Monday.

The Biden administration’s decision to keep Space Command in Colorado reverses a Trump-era plan to move it to Alabama, as Huntsville had scored higher than Colorado Springs in a government assessment of potential locations, according to The Associated Press. Sewell’s anger echoed a bipartisan reaction from lawmakers who insisted that Alabama won the right to the headquarters “fair and square” and accused Biden of making the decision out of political spite.

“This Administration’s decision to keep Space Command in Colorado bows to the whims of politics over merit. Huntsville’s merits won this selection process fair and square. In three separate reports, Huntsville reigned victorious, whereas Colorado did not come in second or even third. This reversal is as shameful as it is disappointing,” Sewell said in a Monday statement.

“I expected more from the Biden administration. A decision of this magnitude should not be about red states versus blue states, but rather what is best for our national security. To be clear, the Alabama Congressional Delegation stands united in opposition to this decision,” Sewell said.

The decision to keep the Space Command headquarters in Colorado Springs has spurred accusations from lawmakers that the Biden administration made the decision politically, according to the AP. Alabama is home to Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who has blocked hundreds of military promotions requiring Senate confirmation in protest of the Pentagon’s abortion policy. Tuberville called Biden’s decision “disastrous” and said it was another blow to an already weakened military.

“No administration has done more to damage our military readiness in my lifetime,” Tuberville said in a statement on Monday. “Today’s disastrous mistake just adds to the long string of bad decisions that this compromised President has made. He is batting 1000 in that category since taking office.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
