Border Patrol arrests of criminal illegal aliens increased more than 26% in 2023, according to recently updated federal data.

Border Patrol arrested 15,267 criminals in fiscal year 2023, which is up from 12,028 criminal arrests in fiscal year 2022, according to the data, which accounts for both the northern and southern borders. Border Patrol arrested 10,763 criminal aliens in fiscal year 2021, and 2,438 in fiscal year 2020, according to federal data.

“When you have an open border, you don’t get to control who or what enters your home,” former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “There are significant real threats coming across the border.”

“Unfortunately, all the current administration wants to focus on as an economic migrants and trying to say that they have a kinder, gentler migration policy, but they’re putting the entire Nation at Risk, as well as the millions of migrants that are handed to the cartels to be trafficked across the border,” Scott said.

The criminal aliens arrested had been convicted of crimes either within or outside of the U.S., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

In addition to the arrests of criminal aliens, Border Patrol recorded 988 apprehensions of criminal aliens with outstanding warrants, according to the data. Nationwide, Border Patrol also arrested 598 gang members, 178 of which were MS-13 members, in fiscal year 2023.

Border patrol encounters with illegal aliens on the terror watchlist at the southern and northern borders hit 172 in fiscal year 2023, which is up from the 98 that occurred in fiscal year 2022.
