A Utah couple was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting their 15-year-old daughter for over a year, claiming that it was “safer” for her than having sex with strangers, according to multiple reports.

Provo, Utah, authorities were called out to the couple’s home on March 7, after the 15-year-old called officials to report the abuse and stated that her mother had been aware, according to ABC4. Both the suspects, who were reported to be in their 30s, were arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail. The girl’s mother was charged with forcible sexual abuse, forcible sodomy and object rape, while the stepfather was charged with forcible sexual abuse, forcible sodomy, object rape and rape. An affidavit, obtained by KSL, stated that the girl had told authorities that “her father had been raping her for the last year and a half,” and was allegedly approached by her mother after she found out that “the victim was wanting to meet and have sex with strangers.” Following his arrest, the girl’s stepfather allegedly admitted to authorities that the couple then decided to teach the girl about sex, and believed that “engaging in sexual acts with the victim would be safer for her than having sex with strangers,” the affidavit stated.

Additionally, the affidavit claims that the stepfather admitted that the couple would buy sex toys for the girl, showing “[the victim] how to use them.” The stepfather continued to tell police that he would occasionally shower with the girl.

While the victim’s mother denied that the stepfather would have sexual intercourse with the 15-year-old, she instead stated that she and the stepfather would have sex in front of the victim, according to ABC4. However, the affidavit revealed that two months before the couple’s arrest, the daughter had come to the mother worried about a broken condom. The daughter’s claims led the mother to confront the stepfather about “having full intercourse with the victim and he denied it at that time,” the outlet reported.

Both suspects are being held without bail due to the “substantial risk” they may pose as they have four other children together, ABC4 reported.
