A graphic video posted Tuesday shows the moment a great white shark severed an Australian surfer’s right leg July 23.
Kai McKenzie, the 23-year-old surfer, was trying to swim to shore when the shark fin appeared close behind him, the New York Post reported. The shark bit through McKenzie’s surfboard and severed his right leg, which later washed up on shore, according to the outlet. Despite his injuries, McKenzie managed to make it to shore where an off-duty police officer used a dog leash as a makeshift tourniquet. Responders placed the severed leg on ice and later sent it to the hospital, where McKenize was treated to assess the possibility of reattachment, according to the report.
McKenzie had only just returned to surfing after recovering from a previous neck injury, the New York Post reported, but he appeared to take the traumatic incident in good humor on his Instagram.
“Spot something missing ? Hahah, so good to have so many amazing people behind me I really appreciate it, love this crew so much thanks for coming yesterday 💖 and to all the donations fucking unreal love you guys the links in my bio is g you’d like to donate,” the surfer wrote.

A GoFundMe page, started by a neighbor at the behest of McKenzie for “recovery and rehabilitation,” has so far accrued over $110,000.
“Kai has an absolute fighting spirit and has outlined that he intends on returning to the water in no time,” the page reads.
