Archaeologists announced Thursday the discovery of an “anti-vampire burial ground” from the Early Middle Ages in Chelm, Poland.
The remains were found during ground repairs at the former Unica bishop’s gardens in Góra Chełmska, appearing to be two children who were decapitated and placed face down in the dirt, according to a Facebook post from the Lublin Provincial Conservator of Monuments. The bodies were held down by a stone, a practice often attributed to “anti-vampire” burials.
“A burial with a face to the ground, cutting off the head or pressing the body with a stone/stones are some of the burial methods used to prevent a person thought to be a demonic entity from exiting the grave,” the post detailed.
Two poles were also found at the site, which may have also been used to hold the bodies in place. (RELATED: Archaeologists Reveal Clues On Why Ancient City Suddenly Disappeared)
The graves were positioned at an east-west axis and were without coffins or any other goods accompanying the children. Further analysis is needed to determine exactly how old the children were, as well as any other key details unique to this burial site.

Ancient vampire burials are sadly not uncommon throughout Europe. In August 2023, the body of a young child, buried face down with an “anti-vampire” padlock on their face was found in Pien, Poland, suggesting this was a fairly common practice throughout the region. At least one mass grave found in Poland is thought to be related to beliefs in vampires, containing 450 bodies with the heads removed and placed between the legs, according to Ancient Origins. It is pretty horrifying to think that someone took the time to do this to 450 separate people, showing just how stupid and dangerous misinformed fear can truly be.
