Richard Lavinthal

Legal PR Expert

Richard Lavinthal has carved out a one-of-a-kind legal media relations niche over three-plus decades of daily newspaper and wire service news reporting, managing national press relations for federal and state prosecutors and, today, at PRforLAW, LLC crafting winning news strategies for plaintiff and defense firms —and their civil and criminal clients.

At the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Jersey he created and then managed a three-person U.S. Department of Justice press office for a decade, serving as spokesman for the Hon. Samuel A. Alito, Jr., the Hon. Michael Chertoff, and the Hon. Faith S. Hochberg when each was U.S. Attorney. Lavinthal managed local assignments for three U.S. Attorneys General (Thornburgh, Barr and Reno), and, ever the early adopter, leveraged leading edge technology to work with media across the country in the New Jersey Unabomber case.

A former AM daily newspaper reporter and international wire service statehouse correspondent in New Jersey’s capital city, Lavinthal also was the first Director of Communications for the New Jersey Attorney General’s Division of Criminal Justice. Later, he directed marketing with special responsibility for national legal and legal-focus organizations at APBnews.com, a New York City-based crime and justice news organization. After APBnews Lavinthal managed a small team of reporters, editing and publishing PoliceOne.com’s daily online law enforcement news.
