60 to 30 Senate vote protects auto dealers from oversight

In a sharp rebuke of President Obama, the Senate voted on Monday to direct conference negotiators to make sure that the final version of a sweeping financial regulatory bill includes a special exemption to shield automobile dealers from the oversight of a new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection.

The vote was 60 to 30, with Republicans unanimously in favor of the instruction to the conferees; 29 Democrats and one independent were opposed. The instructions to conference negotiators are nonbinding, but the vote was more than symbolic in that it articulated the views of a supermajority of the Senate.
