Courtesy of our friends at the Gabor Gazette, here’s Anderson Cooper whining about the trailer for the upcoming movie The Dilemma, in which Vince Vaughn blurts out, “Ladies and gentleman, electric cars are gay.”
I was sitting in a movie theater over the weekend and there was a preview of a movie, and in it, the actor said, “That’s so gay.” And I was shocked that, not only that they put it in the movie, but that they put that in the preview. They thought that it was okay to put that in a preview to the movie to get people to go and see it. And I just find those words, those terms… we’ve got to do something to make those words unacceptable, ’cause those words are hurting kids. Someone else I talked to recently said that the words people use and the things people say about other kids online, it enters into their internal dialogue. And when you’re a kid, it can change the way you see yourself and the way you think about yourself, and the worth that you give to yourself. I think we need to really focus on what language we’re using and how we’re treating these kids.
There’s nothing wrong with being offended that Vince Vaughn is still allowed to make movies. (Especially that one. Holy crap, what was that? The only plausible part of that trailer was the idea that Winona Ryder would seek out a guy who’s more attractive than Kevin James.) But if this is a typical Vince Vaughn flick, he’s supposed to be a jackass.
If you really want to help gay kids and improve their sense of self-worth, instead of griping about what some idiot says in a movie, how about providing a positive role model? Prominent gay people should stand up and say, “Yes, this is who I am and I’m proud of it.” Do you know anybody like that, Anderson? If so, feel free to pass that along to them, buddy. For the children.
P.S. Nikki Finke: Universal Pressured Into Changing “Gay” Trailer For Ron Howard-Vince Vaughn Pic: GLAAD And Anderson Cooper Critical Of It. How odd to see “GLAAD” and “Anderson Cooper” in the same headline. Strange bedfellows, eh?
