Gov. Joe Manchin and Republican businessman John Raese met in the only debate of the West Virginia senate race Monday night. The low-key hour, which also included two third-party candidates, produced few fireworks, but it did offer one of the clearest examples of this election year’s most fascinating phenomenon— the Democrat who looks, sounds, talks, and sometimes even shoots just like a Republican. Thought to be a veritably extinct species after 2008, it has made a comeback all over the country.
