.) Obama prepares sarcastic pick-me-up speech in which he will blame everyone but himself — Happy impending blood-bath, DC Morning readers! Today is election day, and that means bums and state-ordained thieves are kissing their children on the head and telling them to be brave, making the sign of the cross, eating their Wheaties, etc., etc. Pres. Barack Obama is hard at work on a speech that will lift the spirits of his battered and drastically smaller crew. What will he tell them? According to the The Daily Caller’s Jon Ward, Obama “appears ready to offer up the same explanation he’s given after past setbacks: voters don’t understand what he’s doing and that’s why they don’t like it.” That is one explanation for the wave that is washing over this fine country of ours! “Stupid voters!” How will we know what to expect, re: damage? Easy, says Ward: “If Joe Donnelly, the incumbent Democrat in Indiana’s 2nd district, can’t defeat Republican challenger Jackie Walorski, that might be the first sign that GOP gains are going to be much higher than 50 seats. If Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly in Virginia’s 11th district and Democratic Rep. Rick Boucher in Virginia’s 9th district get knocked out when polls there close at 7 p.m., that will be the second sign of an epic wave.” Scribble, scribble, coach!
.) Women, children, and Harry Reid in the life boats first — In Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is thinking about the roiling speech he gave yesterday, in which he said, “I have fought for Nevada my whole life, but you know, I’m not finished fighting,” and wondering if maybe he is done fighting; or if his new role as Senate Majority Canary in Obama’s Coal Mine could be any less rewarding. As the polls open in Nevada, Reid is likely reminding himself of what First Lady Michelle Obama said yesterday at the former pugilist’s last-ditch-effort rally: “The truth is, this is the hard part of change. This election is about all we have left to do.” Retirement is just 24 hours away, Harry. Hang in there.
.) Will Obama remain a “steady captain” even after his crew mutinies? — Metaphors are cheap and easy on election day, and in Malaysia yesterday, an unusually chipper Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was just giving them away. “The political winds blow back and forth but I think you will find that President Obama is a pretty steady captain of the ship…So no matter what happens in our election, you will see him … continuing to promote his agenda, which I think is right for America and right for the world.” Malaysia may agree with the secretary, but the American people–the crew of this fine ship–apparently do not. Ironically, in breaking down America’s election animus, Clinton perfectly described her boss’s biggest problem: “A new president gets elected, he usually does an enormous amount in the first two years, and then people say he has either done too much or not enough. So they send a message to the new president by voting out members of his party.” Voters are sending that message with a keel-hauling today. Mind the barnacles, Democrats!
.) Will Obama sack the rest of his crew after midterms? — Peter Orszag. Rahmbo. Larry Summers. Desiree Rogers: Why doesn’t Obama just can the rest of his team and start from scratch? The incentive is there, reports the Wall Street Journal. In strategy sessions held independently of the White House, top Washington Democrats bemoaned that “Mr. Obama conveyed an incoherent message that didn’t express what Democrats would do over the next two years if they retain power…focused more on his own image than helping Democratic candidates; and…picked the wrong battle when it attacked Republicans for using ‘outside’ money to pay for campaigns, an issue disconnected from voters’ real-world anxieties.” To say that new advisors would fix this problem is a little like saying you can “fix” rancid steak with ketchup, but you can hardly blame a group of overspending authoritarian lunatics for attempting to explain their horrible predicament without indicting themselves.
.) Dems make great investment going after Joe Wilson — “Republican Rep. Joe Wilson and challenger Rob Miller have raised $7.44 million combined in South Carolina’s generally Republican 2nd Congressional District that stretches from south of Columbia to coastal Hilton Head,” reports The Daily Caller’s Paul Conner. “Unions like the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO and Service Employees International Union have dumped thousands of dollars into Miller’s campaign, despite that South Carolina is a union-free state. House Democratic leaders like Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland have also chipped in, as well as the Congressional Black Caucus.” Perhaps the thinking is that if Democrats can unseat Wilson, they can unseat anyone? But wait! The opposite is true, and pretty much the whole world knows it! So is this pure spite? Either way: Dems just wasted a lot of money in order to prove something we already know: Dems are good at wasting money.
.) This night could last many days — Just like it took a long time for the Titanic to sink to the bottom, it may take more than a night to figure out who’s in charge of Satan’s anteroom. “By sunrise Wednesday morning, we still may not have a clear idea of just how many seats Republicans have won in the House,” warns The Cook Political Report. “As one smart Democratic operative points out, between 10 and 20 percent of all competitive races could not be called on Election Night in both 2006 and 2008, and there were only about 60 competitive races in each of those elections. This year, with 100 races listed as competitive on our chart, the number of races left without checkmarks until later dates could easily run in the double digits.”
