TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has banned a drug known as MDVP but commonly labeled “bath salts” and sold at malls, head shops and other outlets.
Bondi issued a 90-day emergency order Wednesday making its sale or possession a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
That’s the same penalty as for the sale or possession of cocaine or heroin.
Bondi said the drugs sold in small foil packets or jars under names that include Vanilla Sky, Ivory Wave and Bolivian Bath can cause users to think they are seeing monsters or can fly.
That raises the danger of young people jumping off high-rise balconies during spring break, Bondi said.
Legislature leaders say the will pass a law to make the ban permanent in March.
