President Barack Obama joined George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Friday, dismissing Donald Trump’s attacks against his birthplace and the ‘birther’ platform holding up his would-be presidential campaign.

“Over the last two and a half years, there’s been an effort to go at me that is politically expedient in the short-term for Republicans,” Obama told Stephanopoulos. “It creates a problem for [Republicans] when they want to actually run in the general election, where most people feel pretty confident that the president was born in Hawaii, where he said he was, and that he doesn’t have horns.”

Obama said he thought Trump’s attacks will help his campaign because Trump avoids the issues that prove most important to voters, like improving the economy and reigning in the deficit.

“My suspicion is that anybody who is not addressing those questions is going to be in trouble,” Obama said.
