Why did the chickens cross the road? For thousands of hens riding in a truck on a California interstate, that joke became reality.
A truck carrying 2,500 birds heading south on Interstate 80 between Sacramento and San Francisco spilled its cargo onto the road, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday.
A California Highway Patrol officer told the Chronicle that the truck jackknifed at about 2:00 a.m. Thursday, scattering its cargo on the interstate and killing many of the chickens.
Highway workers spent “hours” cleaning up the mess and closed all southbound lanes of one section of I-80. The lanes reopened this morning, the officer said.
