Talk about an awkward answer from Mitt Romney on hunting.

Asked at Monday night’s GOP primary debate in South Carolina if he had been on any recent hunting trips, Romney replied: “I’m not going to describe all my great exploits.” (RELATED: Full election coverage)

Then he went on to show his uneasiness.

“I went moose hunting actually — not moose hunting, I’m sorry, elk hunting — with friends in Montana,” he said. “Been pheasant hunting.”

The former Massachusetts governor then admitted he’s “not the great hunter” like “some on this stage probably.”

“I enjoy the sport and when I get invited I’m delighted to be able to go hunting,” he said.

Romney’s answer got more than a few laughs on Twitter.

“I bet there’s not a moose out there that’s nervous about Romney figuring out the difference between moose and elk,” said former Bush administration spokesman Ari Fleischer.
