Evangelical leader James Dobson endorses Santorum

Evangelical family-values advocate James Dobson offered his personal endorsement of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum for president Thursday.

Following in a line of social conservatives, Dobson, a radio broadcaster and founder of Focus on the Family, cited Santorum’s stress on the importance of the family and marriage as a key factor in his decision to endorse the former senator.

“Of all the Republican candidates who are vying for the presidency, former Sen. Santorum is the one who has spoken passionately in every debate about this concern. He has pleaded with the nation and its leaders to come to the aid of marriages, parents, and their children,” said Dobson. “What a refreshing message.”

Dobson added that he is concerned that the 1969 “marriage penalty tax,” which President George W. Bush rolled back during his tenure, will be reinstated in 2013 without a strong voice in support of marriage. According to Dodson, Santorum would be that voice.

“While there are other GOP candidates who are worthy of our support, Sen. Santorum is the man of the hour,” Dodson added. “His knowledge of international politics, especially Israel and the turmoil in the Middle East, is highly relevant to the dangerous world in which we live. This is why I am endorsing former Senator Rick Santorum for president of the United States, and urge my countrymen to join us in this campaign.”
