Forget flowers, candy, and jewelry, what women really need for Valentine’s Day is legal abortion, birth control and maternity care, according to Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards.
In the lead up to Valentine’s Day, House Democrats have been calling for people to use social media to say what they believe women need for Valentine’s Day, using a heart shaped template to do so.
Monday, Richards tweeting out a Vine of herself holding the heart sign filled with items like “safe + legal abortions,” “maternity care,” “Planned Parenthood,” “cancer screenings” “birth control,” “really radical stuff.“

“From now until February 14, House Democrats will lead an online initiative, What Women Need for Valentine’s Day, to amplify the need for Congress to take action on its agenda, When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families. If you would like to join us, use your social media outlets to highlight what women really need. e.g. equal pay,” explains a memo from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi’s office.
