Michael Schumacher, the former F1 champion who is recovering from a ski accident, will likely be invalid for the rest of his life.
The U.K. Telegraph reported that assertion from Zurich-based neurologist Dr. Erich Riederer, who is familiar with comas.
“He will remain an invalid all his life and will always remain dependent on the help of others,” Riederer said to 20 Minuten.
Schumacher was in a coma for nearly 170 days after cracking his skull in a skiing accident.
Corinna Schumacher, his wife of 18 years, did say that he was “getting better, slowly certainly, but in any case it’s improving,” according to The Independent.
Ever since awaking from his coma on June 16, Schumacher has been responding to his wife’s voice. He is still paralyzed and can’t speak, but medical experts hope that he can sit up in a wheelchair at some point.
Schumacher is being treated at a rehabilitation center near his home in Lausanne.
