Last week, I blogged about a woman in St. Louis who said she was attacked because of her Bosnian heritage. As it turns out, she was lying and there’s video evidence.
Christine Byers, St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
A Bosnian immigrant has been charged with making a false police report after claiming three black teenagers threatened to kill her in the Bevo Mill neighborhood because of her ethnicity.
Police said Monday that a surveillance video from a nearby business shows Seherzada Dzanic, 26, of the 4400 block of Gannett Street, just get out of her car and lie in the street shortly before a passing driver found her Dec. 5…
Dzanic’s report occurred in the same week that a group of black and Hispanic teens beat Zemir Begic, a Bosnian, to death with a hammer Nov. 30 near Gravois Avenue and Itaska Street.
Facts are facts. And the fact is, she was lying.
I’m not going to pull a “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” and defend this woman even when the facts are against me. I’m not going to “rape culture” the truth away just because I’m embarrassed about getting snookered. There is no “greater truth” that excuses this woman’s crime.
Yes, Zemir Begic was brutally murdered, and yes, there’s a double standard at work because he’s not a designated victim. But it doesn’t excuse what this woman did. It’s not “raising awareness.” It’s not “fake but accurate.” It’s just an ugly lie.
She wasted the police’s time, and she wasted ours. Shame on her. And shame on me for believing her, just because her story sounded plausible.
I regret the error.
