As expected, Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign officially launched Sunday afternoon.

The announcement was made by senior adviser John Podesta. “It’s official: Hillary’s running for president,” Podesta said in an email to supporters and donors.

“She is hitting the road to Iowa to start talking directly with voters,” Podesta added. “There will be a formal kickoff event next month, and we look forward to seeing you there.”

The email was shared on Twitter by Democratic activist Jesse Berney.

In a risk-averse move, the former secretary of state, 2008 Democratic candidate for president, senator and first lady posted her own announcement video on social media Sunday. By not announcing her candidacy at a public event or in interviews with the media, Clinton has the benefit of having more control over the narrative coming out of her announcement.

“I’m running for president,” Clinton says in the video.

Channeling progressives like Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Clinton says: “Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times. But the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top. Everyday Americans need a champion. And I want to be that champion, so you can do more than just get by. You can get ahead. And stay ahead.”

“So I’m hitting the road to earn your vote,” Clinton adds. “Because it’s your time. And I hope you’ll join me on this journey.”

Clinton is the first major Democratic candidate to enter the race.

Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky have also announced they are running. Marco Rubio of Florida is expected to jump in the contest Monday.
