The wife of Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera spoke to Telemundo in an exclusive interview recorded Feb. 12 in a secret location in Mexico and aired Feb. 21.

El Chapo told his wife Emma Coronel Aispuro that municipal police officers held him, not Mexican Marines or State Police. She said that her incarcerated husband cannot sleep due to a roll call announcement every hour or so.

Speaking with her lawyer present, Coronel said that El Chapo’s prison is very cold and his jail cell is colder still. She also confirmed that there are armed guards with guard dogs outside his cell.

She said she wrote to the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico on behalf of her husband because of his treatment in prison. She called it “hurtful” that people are passing judgement on him since “he still has not been to trial.” She also said her husband’s blood pressure has reached dangerously high levels because of the conditions of his incarceration.

She vividly recalled when Mexican authorities captured him in 2014. Authorities pointed their guns at El Chapo’s wife in the couple’s bedroom, asking where he was. He came out of the bathroom dressed, she said, saying “calm down, here I am.”

Coronel was scared something could happen to her children as she and her husband were taken by authorities in one car and her children were taken elsewhere. She says there were US civilian officials present and speaking English as she accompanied her husband as he was taken into prison.

Coronel said American officials were “supervising” the processing of her husband, and that she recalled U.S. officials taking photos and filming her and her husband. When Telemundo reached out to the DEA to ask if they had been present in the aftermath of El Chapo’s 2014 arrest, they had no comment.
