The head of the prison where Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera is being held denied Feb. 23 the drug kingpin is being tortured and simply wants to skirt special security protocols during his incarceration.

In her first ever televised interview, El Chapo’s wife Emma Coronel Aispuro told Telemundo Feb. 21 she was “afraid” for her husband’s life. Coronel has gone so far as to write to the Mexican National Human Rights Commission on his behalf.

Prison warden Salvador Almonte Solís stated the cartel king has not been mistreated. “This office would not inflict pain or grave suffering that could be construed as torture against the accused.”

Almonte Solís stated El Chapo’s wife and his lawyer are engaging on a public relations campaign on behalf of El Chapo to make him out to be a victim. The main specific allegations by Coronel against the prison warden are that her husband is being sleep deprived and denied visits by his family.

El Chapo is being made to feel like a “zombie” according to his lawyer. Almonte Solís has said though that “it is completely false that his [El Chapo’s] rest is disturbed in the evening hours or during the day.”

Almonte Solís also denied the claim that El Chapo’s family can’t see him. “The fact that he [El Chapo] has not had any family visits is not attributable to this office, rather that his family members have not demonstrated an interest in complying with the widely known terms of authorized visits.”
