In a 1996 NPR “Weekend Edition” interview, Hillary Clinton said that she is proud she was a “Goldwater girl” and that her beliefs are “rooted in conservatism.”

“I feel like my political beliefs are rooted in the conservatism that I was raised with. I don’t recognize this new brand of Republicanism that is afoot now, which I consider to be very reactionary, not conservative in many respects. I am very proud that I was a Goldwater Girl. And then my political beliefs changed over time,” said Clinton in the Jan. 13, 1996 interview.
Hillary has been attacked recently by Sanders for her having past moderate views, and currently claiming status as a progressive. “You can be a moderate. You can be a progressive. But you cannot be a moderate and a progressive,” said Sanders.
