Demi Lovato didn’t think she would live to be 21 years old.
During an interview with American Way magazine, the 23-year-old singer opened up about just how bad her drug and alcohol abuse were when she was a teenager.
“I lived fast and I was going to die young,” Lovato said. “I didn’t think I would make it to 21.” (RELATED: Demi Lovato And Nick Jonas Cancel Concerts In North Carolina Over ‘Bathroom Law’)
Lovato entered rehab in 2010 and was diagnosed with bulimia and bipolar disorder, but she said those issues are what caused her to develop drug and alcohol addictions.
“So now I’m in rehab and I thought, ‘Oh great, now the world thinks I’m just another stereotype.’ I thought, ‘I’m not in treatment for a drug and alcohol problem.’ But once I started eating again, the other issues got worse. It was like whack-a-mole.”
Lovato, who said she used to “smuggle” cocaine on airplanes, has now been sober since 2012. (RELATED: Demi Lovato Shows Support For Transgender Community On Stage)
