Two boys, aged 1 and 3, are recovering in a New Jersey hospital after surviving a harrowing murder-suicide attempt by their own father.
The man, identified as 37-years-old John Spincken, died after jumping off of the Wanaque Bridge along interstate 287 Monday. The father reportedly jumped off of the bridge with his two young sons, after getting into an argument with his wife in Pequannock, N.J.
Police were called to a home on Greenview Drive in Pequannock at approximately 6:55 p.m., according to ABC 7. The mother of the two boys said that Spincken and she were arguing when he stormed off, taking the boys with him and telling her that he was going to harm them.
Approximately an hour later, at 8:08 p.m., state police were notified that a suicidal man may have jumped off of the Wanaque Bridge with two young boys. Upon arrival to the scene, officers discovered Spincken’s unoccupied vehicle on the highway, near the bridge.
Police immediately began searching and located the three bodies. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the two boys were located injured, but alive. The one-year-old suffered a bruised lung, and the three-year-old suffered from a concussion.

“It’s a miracle they [the two boys] survived,” Pequannock Police Capt. Christopher DePuyt said. “Happened very quickly and [the domestic disturbance] became secondary to why we were called there after he threatened to do harm to the boys,” DePuyt told PIX 11 news.
Authorities determined the father intentionally jumped with the two children, according to a statement by police. State troopers said that the investigation is active and ongoing.
The two children were taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., where they were treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
