A 22-year-old Nebraska man was sentenced Tuesday to spend his girlfriend’s birthday and death date in jail after he was convicted of falling asleep at the wheel with her in the passenger seat, resulting in a crash that ended her life.

Colin Larsen faced up to a year in prison for misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide, the Omaha World-Herald reports. Prosecutors sought for Larsen to spend holidays in prison in addition to his girlfriend Tiffany Hofmeister’s birthday and death date. A district judge denied the holiday jail time but added two years of probation. Larsen pleaded no contest to the charges. (RELATED: Car Accident Shows Why Distracted Driving Is A Bad Idea)

Police reports from the 2015 crash stated that authorities found Hofmeister’s body near a wrecked pickup in Sarpy County just after 6 a.m., according to local NBC affiliate WOMT News. Larsen was found six hours later a mile from the crash, resulting in him initially being charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The felony charge was later dropped.

Larsen and Hofmeister had been out all night when, according to Larsen, he decided to drive and show his new girlfriend to his friends, the World-Herald reported.

Larsen received a light sentence due to a clean traffic record and his involvement in the community and his church, which put him at a low risk re-offending.

“I’m truly, very, very, sorry,” Larsen said in court.
