An Egyptian tank ran over an Islamic State suicide car bomb in the Sinai peninsula Wednesday, likely saving dozens of civilians in the surrounding area.
The tank accelerated towards the suicide car bomb to contain the blast near a checkpoint in one of the largest cities in the Sinai peninsula. “The explosion was large, carrying about 100kg of high explosives,” the Egyptian army said in a statement following the incident.
The blast killed 7 civilians, including two children in the surrounding area. ISIS maintains an active insurgency in the Sinai peninsula with deep roots to former Egyptian islamist militias. The Egyptian military is in the midst of a full fledged campaign to root out the terror group.
The group has made headlines in recent months with its consistent targeting of christian minorities throughout Egypt, including suicide bombing church services and massacring buss passengers.
