President Donald Trump has opened up a “world of possibility” after striking a debt deal with Democrats, and is no longer beholden to either party, senior political analyst for MSNBC, Mark Halperin, said Friday.
“So he’s now got a world of possibility before him but it’s going to take months of execution to make this something his supporters see results from, but they will give him slack,” Halperin said on “Morning Joe” Friday.
Trump was able to send a clear message to both parties that he will work with either side to get things done, Halperin said.
“With one meeting he has now put himself in a position to say to both parties, Republicans I’m not beholden to you. You couldn’t provide me winning votes on anything but a Supreme Court nomination … and say to Democrats, the bizarre is now open. I’ve given you a ton right off the bat but now you’re going to have to work with me on tax reform, on infrastructure, on dealing with the Affordable Care Act,” he said.
Halperin said instead of backlash from the base, Trump supporters see this as a way of “shaking things up” and changing the way things are done in Washington.
“You could imagine a world in which this would bring his supporters crashing down on him. There’s no indication of that. Instead I think they see this as a guy shaking things up and that’s what they wanted from him above all else. Change the way that Washington works.”
