There were no deaths on any commercial airline flights throughout the entire year of 2017, making it the safest year to fly commercially in history, according to a report released Monday.
There were 10 combined commercial passenger and cargo planes in 2016 that crashed, killing 44 passengers and crew members throughout the year. Monday marked the 399th day since the last fatal passenger jet airliner accident, according to CNN Money.
The five-year average for commercial passenger and cargo air plane crashes was 17 crashes with 495 deaths, according to a study released by the Aviation Safety Network (ASN), that monitors air travel. The 2017 numbers were “still the lowest numbers in modern aviation history,” according to Harro Ranter, the chief executive for ASN.
ASN recorded 16 accidents that led to 303 deaths in 2016.

The decline in crashes is substantial, especially since people are flying more than ever before. Almost 4 billion people flew commercially in 2016.
