President Donald Trump took credit for a record zero commercial aviation crashes worldwide with a Tuesday morning tweet.
Since taking office I have been very strict on Commercial Aviation. Good news – it was just reported that there were Zero deaths in 2017, the best and safest year on record!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 2, 2018
“The deaths recorded last year were all from cargo planes or smaller propeller-driven passenger aircraft,” CNNMoney reported Tuesday. Trump cited his “strict” policies on commercial aviation as a reason for the decline though it is not immediately clear what policies he is referencing.
The president has made cuts to government regulation a priority in his administration including those in the airline safety arena. The airline industry has lobbied aggressively for a rollback in safety regulations instituted by the Federal Aviation Administration, saying they are exacerbating a record pilot shortage and actually having an adverse effect on safety.
