California Rep. Adam Schiff decried recent leaks from former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks’ congressional testimony as “unfair” on Thursday, in a subtle rebuke of his fellow Democrats on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
“I think it was unfair to Hope Hicks that conversations as part of her testimony were leaked out of the committee. In fairness to her, I think that we should wait until we release the full transcripts of our witnesses to be talking in detail like that,” Schiff told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Hicks told members of the committee that she has occasionally told “white lies” on behalf of President Donald Trump, for whom she has worked for three years.
Hicks tendered her resignation on Wednesday, though it is unclear if her testimony had anything to do with the decision.
Committee Democrats have been accused of being behind the leak, and Schiff did not deny to Blitzer that his side of the aisle was responsible.

If the act of leaking wasn’t bad enough, it emerged on Wednesday that Hicks’ claim to have told “white lies” for Trump was more benign than it was portrayed when initially reported.
Florida Rep. Tom Rooney, a Republican member of the committee who was in the room when Hicks was being questioned, said Wednesday that Hicks said that the types of white lies she had in mind were telling people that Trump was not available when people asked to speak to him by phone. Rooney said that Hicks directly denied lying for Trump about the Russia investigation or about her testimony.

“We’ve interviewed scores of witnesses and now we’ve gotten to the point now where we’re literally bringing people in for nine hours just so the Democrats can leak to the press something as ridiculous as ‘white lies,'” Rooney said in an interview on CNN.
