Greta Van Susteren is the first to admit that she doesn’t know where First Lady Melania Trump has been and what she has been up to in the days following her kidney surgery in May. But she took to Twitter on Tuesday to say that maybe it’s ok that she has been laying low, and maybe it’s “a little weird” that people like Stephen Colbert are so concerned with where she has been.
I don’t know where she is…but is it really our business where she is? She is not an elected official and she just had surgery…maybe give her a break? Maybe it is instead weird that Colbert thinks she has to appear for him? pic.twitter.com/RDV4PDybBk

Van Susteren pointed out several times that Melania is not an elected official, and suggested that the president’s family members — especially those who were neither elected nor appointed as official advisors — should not be subject to the same scrutiny.
I think we should scrutinize our elected officials, especially the President, but leave the family alone. https://t.co/x7yyC4I1ld

Agree that when family are advisors, they should be subject to fair scrutiny ..but not those like wife and children who are not advisors https://t.co/f3JXEfWG6V

She also suggested that, given the state of global politics, “where is Melania” might be less relevant than many other pressing questions.
Could you identify which amendment in the Constitution where you find this right? 🙂 and with all that is going on in the world, why do you even care? https://t.co/GR8IdIg97G

Stephen Colbert called Melania’s absence “weird” on Monday night’s “The Late Show,” then backtracked a little to deliver the punchline. “Well I’m not surprised. It took that Shawshank guy years to tunnel out.”

Colbert was not alone, either. Prior to the first lady’s appearance on Monday night at an event honoring Gold Star military families, CNN’s Brian Stelter topped Sunday’s “Reliable Sources” newsletter with the headline “Melania M.I.A.”
