Natalie Portman, Serena Williams Team Up To Create Pro Women’s Soccer Team

Major celebrities including Natalie Portman and Serena Williams have reportedly teamed up to created a pro women’s soccer team in Los Angeles.

The team, called Angel City, will be part of the National Women’s Soccer League and Los Angeles’ first pro women’s soccer team, according to a report published Tuesday by TMZ. The investors behind the Angel City team, which include Portman, reportedly claim there is a demand for a women’s soccer team in Los Angeles.

Other investors include Williams’ husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, entrepreneur Julie Uhrman and technology star Kara Nortman.

“After the unstoppable legacy of @USWNT, I was hungry to see and do more,” Uhrman said in a statement on Twitter. “I’m so excited to serve as Founder and President of @weareangelcity, bringing a professional women’s soccer team to Los Angeles. “Today we take an exciting step by announcing the first women majority-owned and led ownership group,” Portman said in a statement, TMZ reported. “I am thrilled by the opportunity to partner with this incredible group of people to bring a professional women’s soccer team to Los Angeles.”

“Together, we aim to build not only a winning team on the field, but also to develop a passionately loyal fan base,” Portman added. “We also hope to make a substantive impact on our community, committing to extending access to sports for young people in Los Angeles through our relationship with the LA84 Foundation.”It’s great that a L.A. will have a women’s pro soccer team. I really hope that they do well and have fans. If there really is a demand for a women’s pro soccer team, then it should do really well. That’s exciting.I just think there can never be too many sports teams. The more sports teams you have, the more sports you can watch.
