President Joe Biden has followed up on his campaign promise to propose a sweeping immigration reform bill. Now that it’s out, here’s what it would do to America’s current immigration situation.

The main thrust of Biden’s Citizenship Act of 2021 would give a path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally. The bill would allow all such immigrants to apply for temporary legal status, granting them a five-year window in which to pursue a permanent green card, so long as they can pass a background check and have paid taxes, according to the Daily Beast. The Biden administration has projected confidence about the bill in its opening hours, but it faces a long road to get through Congress.
