More than one year after George Floyd’s death during an incident with Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020, the city continues to face the fallout of last summer’s racial justice protests with mounting violent crime and economic problems.

Just over a decade ago, Forbes ranked Minneapolis the nation’s safest city, and former President Barack Obama once praised the city as an example of how Democratic leadership could bring economic prosperity and safety. But the situation in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul has changed dramatically since the summer of 2020.
