NHL star Bobby Ryan took to Twitter to address his arrest for public intoxication Monday at the Nashville International Airport.

Addressing the recent incident, Ryan wrote in a tweet that he was “Mostly embarrassed, but I shouldn’t be. Today I’m waking up and choosing better.”

“I’ve had so many incredible messages today,” Ryan wrote. “Thank you for all of them. Today is day 1 (again),” he continued in the tweet.

Police reports indicate Ryan was “unaware of his location, the day or time and posed a danger to himself” at the time of his arrest Monday, according to the NY Post. Security cameras captured images of Ryan shoplifting before officers encountered him in a bar, the NY Post reported. (RELATED: Selma Blair Reveals Shocking Details About Her Alcoholism)

The 35-year-old hockey star has reportedly battled alcohol abuse throughout his career in the NHL. He had to miss three months of the 2019-2020 season in order to attend an NHL player assistance program, according to the New York Post.

Ryan thanked his fans in another tweet for showing their support and encouraging his recovery on social media.

“Every now and again you’re reminded exactly why social media exists and today is such a good reason. Thank you guys all from the bottom of my heart. I hate that I’m here, but it’s where I am and I’ll own that,” Ryan wrote.
